“Make the most of your internship!”

Katie K.
Legislative Liaison Intern
Arizona Dept. of Health Services

When Katie became a Legislative Intern with the Arizona Department of Health Services, her goal was pretty simple: to get more experience in her political science field of study and to become more familiar with the Arizona legislative process of bills and laws. Needless to say, her rewards were far greater -- working with legislators, listening to the House and Senate committee hearings, reviewing proposed bills, amendments, referendums and voter proposals for their meaning and effect on ADHS.  In addition to all of this, she worked on restructuring fees for a Child Care Bill and the soon-to-be-on-the-public-ballot, Medical Marijuana Initiative.

“I found out quickly,” says Katie, “that I couldn’t simply sit back and be an observer -- and fortunately, I got many opportunities to be involved in the day-to-day activity of our political process in action.” As for words of encouragement to other interns, she says, “Make the most of your internship. Don’t put off doing what you know needs to be done…procrastination is the fear of success!
